On Prejudice

I’d like to tell you three stories, two bad and one good. I’ll start with the bad. The first bad story is one you’ve no doubt heard already. It concerns Trayvon Martin, a teen-age boy who was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer on the grounds that he looked suspicious. We may never know what transpired between the two of them but what is clear is that a grown man gunned down an…

At The Borad Side: Losing The War For Reproductive Rights

I’m over at The Broad Side this week with an oldie but goodie. I dusted off a post I wrote a year ao about the inevitability of losing the war for women’s reproductive rights: The anti-abortion movement instead operates on dreams of saving apple-cheeked infants who will warm the heart of even the most reluctant prospective mother.  They promote a morality of abstinence, which even the staunchest pro-choice advocate will admit is a fail-safe contraceptive.…

This Week in WTF: Congressman Joe The Plumber?

Since I’ve stopped working on Congressional relations, I’ve lost track of the minutia that used to occupy many of my waking thoughts. For example, I didn’t realize the new Ohio Congressional map pitted Democrats Marcy Kaptur and Dennis Kucinich against each other in a primary. The end result was Kaptur beating out Kucinich and thus ending the long career of the most elfin of Representatives. I’m sure Mr. Kucinich will go on to have wonderful…

Birth Control! Religion! The Sky Is Falling! Or Something.

OK, this is going to be one of these posts where I get all long-winded and pedantic. Feel free to quit reading whenever you feel like it. I’ll try to throw in some cuss words to keep it interesting but I may get boring in spite of myself. So. If you’ve turned on the news in the past few weeks you’ve heard a LOT about birth control. Either  filthy slutty liberals are forcing God-fearing non-slutty…
