Congress Sucks

September 28, 2011

Not sure if you all heard that we were once again within a week of the government running out of money for operations. Yep. The current fiscal year (FY11) ends on the 30th and Congress does not have a plan for how to spend the budgeted funds for FY12. No plan. None at all. Instead of making a real plan, they passed a 6 week continuing resolution so that there’s enough money to keep everything…

New Column: Politics, Punditry, Palin, and Character

September 27, 2011

I have yet another So Here’s The Thing column up at the Washington Times Communities! I’m talking about the new Sarah Palin biography The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin by Joe McGinnis: Like, I say, I’m no Palin apologist. I can tick off half a dozen policy-related reasons not to vote for her and make a good case. I don’t have to resort to making the political equivalent of “yo momma” jokes to…

Should Polygamy Be Legal? Probably Not.

September 26, 2011

Last night was the premier of Sister Wives, one of my favorite voyeuristic pleasures. For those not in the know (and you should be proud of that), Sister Wives is the story of a family that practices plural marriage, known more commonly as polygamy. The show is cagey about what religion they actually practice but I believe they’re part of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints or something similar. All told, there is one husband, four…

Class Warfare

My new gig as an unemployed person leaves me a whole lot less time to peruse the news (ha! I’m a poet!). I catch headlines on the fly and hear snippets in passing rather than listening to CSPAN and MSNBC all day the way I used to at my old job. This new fragmented awareness bothers me because it means I can’t as easily identify the prominent trends in the public discourse. If I don’t…

New Column: Mediocre Mothering

September 20, 2011

I have a new So Here’s The Thing column up over at the Washington Times Communities! I’m bagging on Kate Gosselin for bagging on people with “regular jobs”: Well. There you have it. Us regular-job types are falling short on providing the best for our kids. Yes, thanks to Kate’s trenchant insight, I realize that the co-op pre-school my son goes to, the shoes I picked up at DSW, and that cheeseburger at Five Guys…

New DC Moms Post: HPV: Vaccine, Politics, and Reality

Hey y’all! Because I seem to be on a roll for writing more at other sites than my own, here’s another little linky-link to a piece I did on The DC Moms. I’m weighing in on the weird Bachmann-generated controversy about HPV vaccines. There are a lot of myths, prejudices and fears being passed around in this discussion of Gardisil, the HPV vaccine in question. There are those who oppose vaccines in general. There are…

New Column: Religions Halloween Candy: Treat? Or Trick?

My new So Here’s The Thing column is up over at the Washington Times Communities! It’s all about the “Jesus Harvest Seed” candy I saw last weekend. Never mind the mind-melting comic potential of a product called “Jesus Seeds”, the concept of Bible candy meant to be handed out to kids really, really bothers me. Actually, no. What bothers me is the idea hat someone might hand it out to my kid. Because I’m not Christian,…

Love Thy Neighbor in Sickness and in Health

September 13, 2011

Last night I went to parents night at my son’s new pre-school. The director read this amazon quote about the importance of caring about all children because when your child need surgery, someone else’s child will perform it and if your child is the victim of violence, someone else’s child commits it. I need to go back and source the quote because there was more too it and it was too wonderful to go uncredited…

The Speech I Wish Obama Would Give

September 8, 2011
By

President Obama is going to give a speech about a jobs plan tonight. He’s giving it before a joint session of Congress. He was supposed to do it last night but Speaker Boehner turned him down and asked to reschedule. He cited logistics but we all know it was because of the GOP Presidential debate at Reagan’s American Adventure Land by Disney the Reagan Presidential Library. Which included only two Members of Congress, one of…
